Brian's background is in Biophysics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and did a postdoc at Stowers.
Brian is our department Co-Director, and he regularly helps our research labs fit biological problems into the scope of a microscopy technique that will produce results. Brian consistently finds new collaborations and helps labs to address problems through microscopy and automation that they might not be able to solve any other way.
Jay's background is in Biophysics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and did a postdoc at UC Irvine.
Jay is our other department Co-Director, and he loves new microscopy techniques. He is also an expert in image processing and in coding. He is a world expert on ImageJ, and has created a vast library of image processing utilities in ImageJ. He also knows how to get Science done, and facilitates projects institute wide.
Sean's background is in Physics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Sean is our head and expert in all microscopy techniques. He built our homemade SPIM and PALM rigs, and has developed fluorescent proteins. Sean manages all daily operations as well as working on research projects.
Richard's background is in Physics. He obtained a Masters at the University of Kansas where he studied quantum computing.
Richard is our image processing and coding expert. If you have an image, he will take it and give you back data! For more complex tasks, Richard regularly produces custom programs to process images that cannot be done any other way.
Fengli has a background in plant biology and is an expert in TEM including immunogold technologies. He obtained his Ph.D from Peking University and did a postdoc at UC Davis.
As the manager of electron microscopy, Fengli organizes sample schedules. His publication record contains many examples using immunogold to identify proteins in complex high resolution TEM images.
Morgan's background is in cell and molecular biology. She obtained her Bachelors from Rockhurst University.
Morgan is one of two technicians who are experts in ultramicrotomy. This forms the basis for almost all high resolution electron microscopy at the institute. She also has a passion for investigating the diversity of life both at the institute and as she encounters it in her adventures.
Steve's backround is in creating electronic devices to monitor physiology. He obtained his Masters from University of Misssouri.
Steve is our expert in all things hardware related. He maintains the vast array of microscopy equipment, and has vowed to find and diagnose problems before our users get on a system. He makes sure everything is running smoothly so that our scientists can focus on science.
Amanda's background is in Physical Chemistry. She obtained her Masters at the University of Colorado where she got to play with femtosecond lasers bouncing off a plethora of mirrors!
Amanda is our optics expert. She helped to build our home-made SPIM microscope, and whips up any custom optics breadboards that a project might require.
Jeff's background is in Analytical Chemistry. He obtained his Ph.D. at Kansas State University where he unlocked the complexities of single molecule diffusion and electron trapping on nano-porous membranes and did a postdoc at Washington University in St. Louis.
Jeff is our expert in complex microscopy techniques, microfabrication, and microfluidic devices. He regularly helps our scientists design experiments using a wide array of microscopy techniques. He also maintains a microfabrication lab where he creates microfluidic devices to enable researchers to perform experiments that could not be done otherwise.
Cindy's background is in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. She obtained her Masters at Oklahoma State University.
Cindy is our microscopy and training expert. She is an expert in obtaining amazing images from our many microscopes, under any number of different experimental conditions. She also regularly trains our scientists to use our microscopes and to understand the theory and methods so that they can be more effective in their scientific mission.
Melania's background is in biological electron microscopy. She obtained her Bachelors at University of Missouri-Columbia.
Melania is our expert for the 3View 3D automated block face SEM system. In addition her publications contain many examples of 3D segmentation and analysis. Melania is always up for trying something new!
Sarah's background is in Biology. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas Medical Center while completing research right here at the Stowers Institute.
Sarah is our expert in complex microscopy techniques and experimental design. She regularly helps our scientists design all phases of their experiments. She has a great understanding of both biological and microscopy methods, and has nurtured several difficult projects to completion that would not have made it without her guidance.
Chris's background is in Physics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
Chris is our image processing and coding expert. He is an expert at dealing with complex coding platforms and has created custom code to interface with various microscopy equipment.
Kexi's background is in mammalian oogenesis. He obtained his Ph.D. from Florida State University and did a postdoc here at Stowers.
Kexi is an expert in preparing complex samples for electron microscopy. His extensive experience with those samples from his own research means he can guide researchers in how to best design their project around electron microscopy and other techniques.
Zulin's background is in Biophysics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and did a postdoc here at Stowers.
Zulin is an expert in complex microscopy techniques. His specific focus of late has been on SIM super resolution. He has helped our scientists to take images of structures that no one in the world has ever seen before.
Xia's background is in biology. She obtained her bachelors from the Southwest University of China.
